Now that Plastic Free Whitstable has its own webpage, we’ll be highlighting local businesses committed to reducing single use plastic and signed up as Plastic Free Whitstable Business Champions. First up is Tankerton Arms!
The Tank is a micro pub at 135 Tankerton Road, CT5 2AW. It opened in 2013 and signed up as a PFW business ten years later. The landlord, Jon, says that reducing plastic is important to him. He grew up in Whitstable and so the “sea has always been part of his life and doing what we can to keep it clean is important to him.”
For example the Tank has moved away from beer in plastic kegs, trying to use steel removeable kegs instead. One thing which Jon has found difficult is sourcing non plastic takeaway containers, though in the meantime they are going to add labels encouraging customers to bring them back for refills. They have managed to find suitable takeaway drinks containers.
Jon’s advice to new businesses is that plastic alternatives have improved greatly over the past few years. He says that “they may be a little more expensive but customers appreciate that you’re doing something to help.”
